Grade Needed

Quick start

How to use the Final Grade Calculator

  1. 1

    Enter your current grade

Type the percentage you currently have in the class (whatever your gradebook shows).

  2. 2

    Set your target grade

The overall course grade you're aiming for, as a percent. Want a B+? Enter 87.

  3. 3

    Enter the final's weight

How much the final counts toward your overall grade. If the syllabus says 30%, enter 30.

  4. 4

    Read what you need

The calculator shows the score you'd need on the final. If it's over 100% you'll see a warning that it's not achievable.

How the Final Grade Calculator works

The Final Grade Calculator solves for the score you need on a final to push your overall grade to a target. It accounts for how much weight the final carries vs. work you’ve already completed.

If the answer is above 100%, it’s flagged as not achievable — you’d need extra credit. If below 0%, your current grade is already above your target.

Formula

needed = (desired − (1 − weight) × current) / weight

Where

desired
your target overall course grade
current
your current grade in the class
weight
how much the final counts (as a decimal — 30% = 0.30)

FAQ

Common questions

Where do I find my current grade?
Your class's grade portal, online gradebook, syllabus tracker, or wherever your instructor updates grades. If nothing's tracked, compute it yourself using the Grade Calculator from your assignments.
What does “final weight” mean?
The percentage of your overall course grade that comes from the final exam (or final project). If your syllabus says “Final: 30%”, the weight is 30.
What if the final is the only graded item left?
If you've completed nothing else, set your current grade to 0 and the final weight to 100. The “needed” grade will equal your target.
Can I aim for a letter grade instead of a percent?
Use the threshold for the letter — for example, if your school's B+ starts at 87%, enter 87 as your target. Customize the threshold table via Grade Scale if your school uses different cutoffs.
Why does it say “Not achievable”?
The score you'd need is above 100%, which isn't possible without extra credit. Try lowering your target or check your weights — sometimes the final is worth less than you think.
